For forty years, Malcolm washed his wife off things. Glasses. Cups. Collars. The grandchildren. At their ruby wedding dinner he held her wine glass up in front of everyone — "look at it, it's like a crime scene" — and everybody laughed. Not everybody . Elaine found out two days later that the ruby lipstick he'd spent an hour choosing hadn't been for her. The girl at the counter remembered him. "He said she had the most beautiful mouth he'd ever seen." It was for her sister. Here's what the girl at the counter told her, and it's the part that matters: it was never her mouth. It was paint. Paint sits on top of the lips. So of course it moves. Of course it goes into the lines. Paint always cracks. Fifty years of wearing lipstick — and somebody else had always chosen the colour. A girl at a counter. A magazine. A husband. So she ordered the one nobody can choose for her. It goes on clear. Eight seconds of nothing. Then her own colour comes up, made by her own lips. At the party, her cup was clean. Her sister's was already in her lines. And Elaine left — "somewhere I choose." 👉 Buy one, get one free. 90 days to send it back.
